Fashion Photography

Application:
Fashion photography is a type of photography mainly used to display clothing and other fashion items, and is usually used to advertise the fashion item brand, or, the model in the photo. As time goes by, fashion is drastically changing, forever looking into the future of fashion.
Some of the main british fashion magazines include:
  • Vogue
  • Bohemia
  • Dazed & Confused
  • Look
  • Pop
Fashion photography can be pretentious. Magazine editors usually have the final decision and it can be a cut-throat and ruthless business. Most of the photos taken are discarded, this may be because the editor doesn't like the style, clothes, colour arrangement, or something as simple as the editor having a bad day.

Context:
Most fashion photography is found in fashion magazines, as this the most popular way to get it to a wide array of people all over the world. Fashion magazines are almost 100% fashion, either  fashion photos, or adverts advertising well known brands of clothes, perfumes, etc.

Technique

Different lighting effects and using different backgrounds play a big part in fashion photography. One of the main techniques used today is the use of photo editing tools, such as photoshop, to air brush out imperfections, and slightly alter the image
In this example of photoshopping, you can see evidence of the models actual figure and skin tone in the left hand picture, whilst the right hand picture shows how airbrushing the photo can remove all imperfections the model may have, or wants to remove
