Photo Journalism

Context

The photos used in photojournalism doesn't always tell the full truth behind the photo, some are doctored in such a way to change peoples appearance, make someone or something be in the picture that wasn't in the original photo, etc.

Henri Cartier-Bresson

The decisive moment is where the photographer captures a split second of the world, giving it a different perspective.
Henri Cartier-Bresson told the Washington Post in 1957 "There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative." One frame in or out of the decisive moment, and it might ruin the photo, and not be able to show what the photographer wants to show.

Application

Photo journalism can be found all over the place, magazines, books, newspapers, TV, films, internet, etc., and can sometimes be used to show key points in history.

Technique

Henri Cartier-Bresson used a famous camer introduced in 1925 Germany called the Leica. it was famous because it was the first portable camera to be made, making it much easier to carry around. It also enabled the photographer to look through the camera lens, and still be able to see out of the other eye, so he/she can get a better idea of what the picture will look like.
